New type of plastic which will be endlessly recyclable

Researchers have found a new type of plastic which can be recycled forever as we all know that there are many types of plastics which are recycled on a daily basis but unfortunately there are some plastic products which are way hard to recycle or never get recycled. The US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researchers has come up with a new type of plastic which is easily breakable and reusable by molecular Lego brick.

Chemist Peter Christensen said, “Most plastics were never made to be recycled, But we have discovered a new way to assemble plastics that takes recycling into consideration from a molecular perspective.” A large amount of plastic is produced from petroleum which is an organic substance and then they are mixed up with the chemicals which give plastics different shape and size whether they are used as shopping bags, straws, or furniture.

There are many sorts of plastics which can be broken down and recycled easily. We do throw the bottles made of polyethene terephthalate (PET) in the recycle bin but we don’t prefer to throw the thermoset plastic toy or utensil. Researchers are working on making the thermoset plastics easy to recycle and to take over the problem the researchers are looking for a simple and efficient way to recycle the hard plastics and possibly, the new plastic developed by Berkeley Lab seems potential enough to stand on the expectations.

Its building block is a monomer called diketoenamine: a compound formed by sticking a triketone to an amine. Condensing these units into a long string forms a plastic called poly (diketoenamine) – or PDK – and the bonds can be dissolved with ease using nothing more than a 12-hour soak in a strong acid bath. Chemist and team leader Brett Helms said, “With PDKs, the immutable bonds of conventional plastics are replaced with reversible bonds that allow the plastic to be recycled more effectively.”
