Offer your baby solid food that help in sleep longer, new study says

Mothers should breastfeed only for the first six months and after they can introduce their baby to solid food, Both the U.K. National Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics advised.

The new study found that those babies who given solid food and also breast milk so they can sleep better for a long time as compared to those babies who only depend on breast milk. The study also found that those baby who starts having solid food earlier than six months had a benefit for both baby and her mother also. The study published in the JAMA Pediatrics.

The new study by King’s College, London, and St George’s, University of London, analyzed 1,303 babies of three-month-old and then researchers separated these babies into two groups in which one group of babies was depended on their mother’s milk or breastfed for a time of six months and another group was provided solid food plus breast milk at the age of three months.

The parents fill out the questionnaire online every month until their baby was 12 months old and after it, the parents filled it in every three months until their baby was three years old.

The study found that babies in the first group who ate solid food plus breast milk slept for a long time period, woke for fewer hours and not have complications of sleep in comparison to those babies in the second group who were breastfed for about six months.

Offer your baby solid food after six months, so wait for the time, suggested by The NHS and the World Health Organization. But this advice is under evaluation.

According to the Infant Feeding Survey of 2010, around 75 percent of British mothers given their baby solid food before five months.

Prof Gideon Lack from King’s College, London, said in a statement, “The results of this research support the widely held parental view that early introduction of solids improves sleep.” Gideon added, “While the official guidance is that starting solid foods won’t make babies more likely to sleep through the night, this study suggests that this advice needs to be re-examined in light of the evidence we have gathered.”

Prof Mary Fewtrell, nutrition lead at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, responding to the study, guided that this advice for feeding solid food to the infant is under review.

She said, “These are interesting findings from a large randomized controlled trial. At the RCPCH, we recommend that mothers should be supported to breastfeed their healthy-term infant exclusively for up to six months, with solid foods not introduced before four months.”

She added, “However, the evidence base for the existing advice on exclusive breastfeeding is over 10 years old and is currently being reviewed in the UK by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. We expect to see updated recommendations on infant feeding in the not too distant future.”

Which type of food should you feed your baby?

You should feed your baby the mashed or soft cooked fruit and vegetables. Parsnip, potato, yam, sweet potato, carrot, apple or pear are the example of a healthy food that you can feed it to your baby. Mix baby rice or baby cereal with your baby’s milk. Offer your baby different types of food and it can take a lot of time to accept by the baby as the new food.

A Food Standards Agency (FSA) spokesperson said, “We are encouraging all women to stick to existing advice to exclusively breastfeed for around the first six months of age. If there is any doubt about what’s best for your baby, please seek advice from your doctor or health professional.”
